#10 Film Genre Research Case Study Part 2

Film Genre Research: The Perfect Date

Camera shots, angles, movements: The film begins with a close-up of a computer screen while it types out “dear office of admissions". It then cuts to a medium shot of Brooks the main character while slowly zooming in. The purpose of this is to introduce the main character to the audience. It then cuts to a close-up of Brooks hand typing on the computer into a medium shot. In the next clip from his side at a hit level, he still types on the computer. Jumping to an extreme close-up of Brooks' face shows how focused he is on what appears to be his college essay. We then see him asleep on his computer in a close-up shot before showing a point of view of him turning off his alarm. As the movie begins this shot creates meaning by showing his characteristics of being focused and dedicated to his work. The next few camera shots are of a few items laying around Brooks room through the use of a static shot. Brook's personal items establish what he likes that comprise him.

Editing Techniques and Tone: Throughout the opening scene Brooks dialogue is in a calm voice and is done through a voiceover. The audience may see him as intelligent and a problem solver when he retains what sounds like a quote or poem. The opening scene is edited with lots of standard cuts but when it gets to Brooks talking with his friend in a shot/reverse shot. Overall, the mood of the opening to this film is very cheerful and happy.

Sound Techniques: Right as the fil

m starts the upbeat music plays right before Brooks starts his voice over. This can be seen as a non-diegetic sound not affecting Brooks. The upbeat music sets the scene for how the opening will play out which molds a cheerful atmosphere. As he types on the computer you can slightly hear the buttons being clicked, which adds more of an effect on the audience. Next, the camera cuts to him snoring in his sleep right before his alarm rings, switching to diegetic sound.

Mise-en-scene techniques: The film begins at night as Brooks is on his computer doing homework. He seems to be wearing casual clothes that could be his pajamas. The desk he is sitting at is very basic with all of the normal items that are found on a desk: Pencils, lamp, notebook, computer, and books. The movie is set in the modern days as he has an iPhone to stay connected to others. This adds to the sense of normalcy. There are lots of books around his room which adds to him being focused academically and smart. For a few seconds his father is shown but it contrasts to how brooks stay on task while his dad has fallen asleep on the couch. Once he changes, he has a button-down shirt with khaki pants. The lighting throughout the opening is very natural and is compared to what time of the day it is.

Production and Distribution Techniques: Awesomeness Films teamed up with Netflix to create the film The Perfect Date directed by Chris Nelson. The movie was produced by Matthew Kaplan and John Tomko, written by Randall Green and Steve Bloom. The cinematography is credited to Bartosz Nalazek and edited by Ben Baudhuin, Tara Timone, and Brad Wilhite. The budget to produce the perfect date was about 5.7 million dollars and once it was released onto Netflix, they said the film was viewed in about 48 million households in the first few weeks.

Opening Credits: The first credits revealed are the production companies, Awesomeness Film and ACE Entertainment. It is shown in a bold font in a teal color that can symbolize renewal/calmness and can foreshadow future events. Using a bold font could also reference masculinity as the main character is a guy. The opening credits are shown in the corner of the film and for the animations, the credits slowly fade in.

Awards/Nominations/Reasoning: The Perfect Date won 3 awards and was nominated for 5 award categories. Noah Centineo, who plays Brooks Rattigan, won Comedy Movie Star at the People's Choice Awards and Choice Comedy Movie Actor at the Teen Choice Award in 2019. Laura Marano also won Choice Comedy Movie Actress and was nominated in the Choice Ship category. Although the Perfect Date was nominated for Choice Comedy Movie it sadly did not win. However, I recommend watching this movie if someone is looking for a teen comedy drama movie like I was. I chose to research this film because the opening scene has similar ideas of how my group, and I are doing our project.
