After our failed attempt last Monday, we finally were able to get together today and film. The entire cast list, Indy, and I were in attendance. Due to some unfortunate circumstances Madelyn was not able to attend the filming day. This was because Madelyn struggled to find available days matching our schedules, so we had to move on in our filming or else we would have been behind. This was not ideal but at the end of the day we knew it was the best thing to do for our group.
We began filming around 10:15 am in my bedroom with me shooting for the establishing shot of the room and some close-ups of personal items that implies some important details about our main character. Since Madelyn couldn't make it, I had to set out our props and did my best to make it similar to how she did it during our last film day. I then started with some different angle and movement shots of Aubrey turning her music on, getting ready, and dancing around the room. For these shots I used the shoulder rig to keep the camera as steady as possible as she moved around the tight room. I also made sure we got each shot a few times, so we had options when it came time to edit.
I found it challenging though at times to film certain shots in my tight bedroom while also having big furniture in my room. There was a lot of maneuvering and fixing of my angles and camera work I had to do, and it took me several tries. But after I got the hang of the equipment the filming process went more smoothly. After about an hour or so Leila arrived, and we began shooting the dialogue scenes between her and Aubrey. The whole filming process was starting to be fun, and I loved having Indy direct and show our actors what to do in each shot. Once Lucas arrived and we got to his shots he was perfect and it was probably the easiest shots to record out of our whole project. By the end of the opening, I was able to use the Tripod and dolly to get a tracking shot of Aubrey walking to the door. I also used the Tripod to get Aubrey to open the door while I was outside.
We also used the natural light from my room to keep the tone happy and casual. In the beginning when we first started to film it was bright and sunny outside, which is what we envisioned. By the end of the film, we wanted it to slowly get darker to show a switch in the atmosphere and it happened naturally. In the last hour of filming, it rained and dimming the lighting was not necessary anymore. The lighting change was to start creating suspension for the audience and having it rain significantly helps set the tone.
Overall, it took us about five hours to film and we ended around 3:00 pm. I still need to transfer the videos onto my hard drive, but I am feeling very confident about our results and how everything played out.
