#12 Week 3: Filming Day Reflection Part 1

Today was officially the first day of filming. My day started bright and early at 7:30 am on my day off from school due to president day to try and finish any last-minute cleaning and preparation for the set. I made sure to place all my props out based on what Madelyn, Indy, and I discussed during the week and leave room for any other props Indy was bringing. The first actor to arrive at my house was Riley Tribit, who plays Claire. She arrived at my house around 8:30 am and came with me to pick up the room divider from my dance studio. After yesterday's debacle of running around town looking for a room divider for one part in the film where Isabella changes into her dress, I finally realized my dance studio had one. After retrieving the room divider, we went back to my house to set it up and wait for everyone else. Then Aubrey Flint, our lead actor who plays Isabella, arrived at my house. Around 9:15 am Madelyn showed up and brought the script she printed out ahead of time like I asked last night and began setting up the setDespite Indy being the last to arrive, she came with donuts for our actors and flowers for our guy to hold in the last scene. Gavin, our actor who plays Adam, was not coming until 11:00 am since we only needed him for the last few shots.

Everything was going accordingly once we were all present and were having so much fun. Madelyn finished setting up the makeup and stuffed animal props brought by Indy. I then began setting up the camera equipment, as Madelyn and Indy were making the flower bouquet. Although it was a little stressful being the cinematographer, I began filming some establishing shots. After about half an hour I was ready to start filming our actors' openings. When I began filming, Madelyn held the script for our actors and the boom poll while Indy held my phone with pictures of our storyboard to direct the actors.

After filming the first few shots the camera went black and shut off. This is when the downfall of our perfect filming day happened. The camera we had borrowed from our class had died on me and we could not do anything about it. At first, I thought it needed to charge but my teacher told me the wrong charger to use to charge the camera. I frantically searched my house for a cord and even asked my dad to help look for one. Then looking back at the camera it didn't say charge battery but instead it said change battery pack Which at that point was out of my control. Stressed that we only had today to film with the whole group Indy and Madelyn went to Best Buy in search of a battery. Unfortunately, we were out of luck, and they didn't sell any charging equipment for the EOS Canon camera. Not knowing what to do next we came to an agreement that we would just have to wrap up filming for the day and start over another day once the camera was fixed. We then told Gavin, who just arrived, that he was not needed for today anymore. I was very disappointed at the fact that we could have completely filmed our opening for this project. But the universe turned its back on us today. I felt bad that everyone took time out of their day to come to the film, so I took my two actors for lunch afterwards to thank them for coming. I do not know when we can film next and will discuss it more in class tomorrow.
